Production
Engineering and Industry
Production is the process by which useful products are
create to fulfill the needs of the society. Nearly all items used in our daily
life are considered industrial products. These products differ much in type,
shape, and material but they are all common in one respect, they are formed into
their final shapes by performing different manufacturing processes on raw
materials.
Production
engineering is the branch of science dealing with the elements of manufacturing
processes. Its final aim is to produce useful products with the highest quality
and the least possible cost.
The
basic knowledge of manufacturing processes is vital to all engineers working in
different fields of engineering and industry. Even for specialized branches of
engineering which have their own technology and practice, such as chemical,
building, and civil engineering, this kind of knowledge is also needed. The
techniques of cutting, drilling, riveting, and welding used in constructing a
steel structure of a building or a bridge will be the same as those used in any
mechanical workshop.
Economical production of high-quality products
requires other knowledge beside that manufacturing processes. This extra
knowledge needed will be concerned mainly with elements of production planning
and control, quality control, and cost evaluation.
